NEC Spokesperson Says Number of Recognized National Observers May Reach Close to 70,000

PHNOM PENH: The Spokesperson of the National Election Committee, Hang Puthea, has told EAC News that there are no international observers for the 2022 Commune/District Council elections, as the number of national observers alone may increase to nearly 70,000.

The NEC Spokesperson has said that as of Wednesday, 25 May, the NEC has registered more than 50,000 national observers for the Commune/District Council elections, while more than 10,000 observers are still in the process of being checked. In total, he estimates that there will be more than 69,000 national observers for these elections.

As for international observers, Hang Puthea confirmed that there are none present for this election, however there will instead be special guest diplomats in Cambodia. Currently, three embassies have requested to be special guests for the Commune/District Council elections, including the embassies of Japan, the European Union and Australia.

The NEC stopped accepting applications for national observers on 25 May, 2022.

The 5th Commune/District Council Election will be held on 5 June with 17 political parties taking part.
